Annika Bell’s Stairs for Support: Climbing for Women’s Shelters in Nova Scotia
As the demand for services at women’s shelters in Nova Scotia continues to rise, one woman has embarked on a unique fundraising initiative. Annika Bell, through her campaign titled “Stairs for Support,” aims to raise funds for organizations supporting women who have faced sexual assault and domestic violence.
A Climb for a Cause
This summer, Bell has pledged to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest—29,000 feet—using a StairMaster. For every dollar contributed to her GoFundMe campaign, she commits to climbing five floors on the machine. Her ambitious undertaking not only challenges her physically but also seeks to create a significant impact for those in need.
“I wanted to set a really high standard for myself and I kind of thought, ‘What’s tall and big that I could climb?’” Bell reflects with a laugh. Currently, she has reached two-thirds of her goal but requires further donations to complete her climb.
Making a Difference
The funds raised through the “Stairs for Support” initiative are allocated to vital organizations such as Adsum House and Avalon, which provide critical support for survivors of sexual violence and those facing domestic living conditions. Kathy McNab, fund development officer at Adsum for Women and Children, noted that these donations would primarily assist in covering food allowances and activities within their facilities.
“(Donations) would go to our general, everyday food allowances at the house,” McNab explained. “We aim to provide sustenance and activities for those living in our shelter and housing locations.” She emphasizes the increasing demand for such services, with many individuals seeking refuge from domestic and intimate partner violence.
The Increasing Need for Support
“Every single month, the demand seems to be greater in the last two years,” McNab adds, highlighting that nearly 80% of the individuals they assist are escaping domestic situations. “As families struggle financially, tensions rise, which can lead to increased violence,” she stated, underscoring the urgency of addressing these issues.
Bell is not only motivated to raise funds but also to foster awareness and support for survivors, stating, “It motivated me, not only to raise money for these centres but also for survivors. Letting them know they’re not alone.”
Conclusion
The “Stairs for Support” campaign exemplifies a proactive approach to aiding vulnerable populations in Nova Scotia. As Bell climbs, she combines fitness with philanthropy, delivering a powerful message of solidarity.
