Georgia Women’s Cross Country Concludes Season with Strong Showing at NCAA South Regional

The Georgia women’s cross country team finished in 11th place at the NCAA South Regional held in Huntsville, Alabama, marking the end of their competitive season. The event highlighted a number of personal-best performances, particularly among the team’s freshman athletes.

Key Performances

Sophomore Izzy Yonas led the Bulldogs with her impressive time of 20:12.09, earning a 28th place finish. This performance notably broke freshman Anastasia Nilsson’s streak of leading the team at the previous three meets, as Nilsson finished in 39th place with a time of 20:24.00. Both runners demonstrated their commitment to improving upon their recent SEC Championship performances, where they also played pivotal roles for the team.

Freshman Contributions

With Yonas being the only upperclassman in the lineup, the Bulldogs leaned heavily on their first-year competitors. Key contributions included:

  • Lauren Skeens – 94th place with a personal best of 21:21.78
  • Madeleine Holland – 104th place in 21:28.71
  • Maeve Waddell – 126th place with a career-best of 21:56.48
  • Erin Musty – 137th place at 22:08.56

Each of these athletes set personal records, showcasing the program’s focus on cultivating the potential of its younger competitors.

Program Development and Future Outlook

The Bulldogs’ 11th-place finish reflects an emphasis on building depth and skill within the team, primarily through the experience of its newcomers. This season follows their 15th-place finish at the SEC Championships, highlighting a pattern of growth and resilience within the program.

Although they did not qualify for the NCAA Championships, the combination of individual achievements and team dynamics provides a strong foundation for the future. The Bulldogs are eager to harness this momentum as they prepare for the upcoming season’s training.
