Celebrating Women in Sports
In a spirited celebration of Women and Girls in Sports Day, the George Washington women’s basketball team marked a triumphant return to form, defeating Fordham with a score of 69-59, much to the delight of Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter, who was in attendance.
First-year standout Gabby Reynolds shone brightly on the court, leading her team with an impressive 18 points from 6-of-11 shooting, including a remarkable 3-of-4 performance from beyond the arc. The 5’9″ point guard also contributed significantly on the boards, grabbing eight crucial rebounds despite Fordham’s overall advantage in rebounding (51-41), largely fueled by a dominant 28-9 edge in offensive rebounds. Fellow first-year player Miriam Diala also made a significant impact, notching a team-high five assists from her frontcourt position.
The George Washington team showcased their might with a robust defensive effort, limiting Fordham to just 24.3% shooting for the game. GW maintained control throughout the contest, leading for over 37 of the 40 minutes played, with their largest lead swelling to 20 points early in the fourth quarter. Fordham attempted a late-game rally, narrowing the deficit to five points with three minutes left, but GW held steady to secure the victory.
The turning point emerged from the halftime break as George Washington transformed a narrow 27-24 lead into a commanding 49-36 advantage by the close of the third quarter, showcasing their powerful performance on the court.
Looking ahead, the GW women’s basketball team is eager to continue their winning momentum with an upcoming matchup against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, set to tip off at 1 p.m. in Olean. St. Bonaventure currently sits at the bottom of the A-10 standings with a 1-10 league record, as they prepare to take on UMass tomorrow.
