Texas Tech Freshmen Shine at Furman Classic
Freshmen tennis players Ella Brownback and Polina Sleptova showcased impressive skills during their debut at the Furman Classic, held in Greenville, South Carolina. The duo clinched the doubles title, highlighting Texas Tech’s strong performance in the early tournament rounds.
Doubles Competition
Competing in flight three, Brownback and Sleptova began their tournament journey with a first-round victory against Wake Forest University, finishing the match with a score of 6-4. They continued their winning streak into the second round, where they faced Indiana University in a closely contested match. The Tech pair triumphed with a score of 7-6, propelling them into the third round on Saturday.
Furman’s freshman team of Bianca Ceroni and Molly Robinson also advanced to the third round in flight three before meeting the Red Raiders. However, Brownback and Sleptova delivered a dominant performance, sweeping their opponents 6-0 to secure their spot in the finals.
Flight One Results
In addition to the success of the freshman duo, Texas Tech’s experienced seniors, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Mariia Hlahola, made their mark in flight one. Ranked No. 49, the pair reached the third round, but their journey ended on day two when they lost 6-3 to a team from the University of South Carolina.
Singles Highlights
The singles competition saw Dmitrichenko, ranked No. 76, face Kaitlyn Carnicella, a junior from South Carolina ranked No. 24, in the final round of flight one. Despite a strong effort, Dmitrichenko fell to Carnicella in two sets, leaving her without the singles title.
In another promising showing, Sleptova earned two wins in her singles flight debut, while Brownback secured three victories in her first singles tournament in flight four. However, neither freshman advanced to the final rounds of their respective flights.
Looking Ahead
Texas Tech’s next challenge will be at the ITA Bedford Cup, scheduled to take place from Friday through Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The team will look to build on their early successes and gain more valuable experience as the season progresses.
