PHILADELPHIA— The Ivy League announced the 2024-25 All-Ivy honors on Thursday, highlighting the impressive achievements of the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s tennis team. This year, the Quakers secured one First-Team selection and one Second-Team recognition, alongside two Honorable Mentions.
Individual Recognitions
Esha Velaga was distinguished with a First-Team nomination for her outstanding performance in singles. Meanwhile, Sabine Rutlauka earned a spot on the Second-Team in singles. Both players were also acknowledged for their doubles performance, receiving Honorable Mentions alongside their partners, Maya Urata and Eileen Wang.
Esha Velaga’s Stellar Season
Velaga’s unanimous selection to the First-Team marks the second consecutive year she has received this accolade. Completing the season with a record of 8-5 overall, she shined in Ivy League matches with a 4-1 record. Despite facing an injury early in the season, she returned to form during conference play, switching between the number one and number two positions on the team.
Sabine Rutlauka’s Perseverance
In her final season, Rutlauka compiled a record of 4-7 in team competition and 1-4 in Ivy League play, earning her third All-Ivy singles recognition. She managed to contend with a foot injury during the latter part of the season while remaining a key player in both singles and doubles matches. In 13 matches for the Quakers this spring, Rutlauka’s contributions were instrumental in the team’s second-place finish in the conference.
Debut Honors for Maya Urata
Maya Urata made a significant impact this season, achieving her first All-Ivy recognition. Finishing with an overall doubles record of 8-7 and a 3-3 mark in conference play, she partnered with Esha Velaga to receive an Honorable Mention. Urata excelled in singles as well, holding a superb record of 12-1 overall, including 4-1 in league contests.
Eileen Wang’s Contribution
Eileen Wang, concluding her collegiate tennis journey, received her second All-Ivy doubles honor alongside partner Sabine Rutlauka. The duo posted an impressive 7-4 record in doubles, with a 3-3 mark in the Ivy League. Wang’s versatility was evident as she played across four different positions on the ladder this season, contributing significantly to the team dynamics.
