Presidential Election for Korea Federation of Science and Technology Organizations: Candidates Announced

The Korea Federation of Science and Technology Organizations is set to hold its presidential election on the 27th of this month, following the commencement of the campaign on the 13th. This election is particularly significant as it marks a crucial transition in leadership, especially in light of the federation’s 60th anniversary.

Confirmed Candidates

The Presidential Candidate Recommendation Committee has officially confirmed five candidates for the presidency. They are:

  • Kwon Oh-nam: A professor at Seoul National University, Kwon is recognized for her contributions to mathematics education and is the only female candidate in this election.
  • Park Ho-gun: Former Minister of Science and Technology and head of the Incheon Institute, Park has a long history of policy engagement.
  • Seo Pan-gil: Currently the head of the Korea Brain Research Institute, Seo has published extensively in life sciences.
  • Shin Seong-cheol: A former president of both KAIST and DGIST, Shin is known for advocating science and technology diplomacy.
  • Lee Deok-hwan: An esteemed emeritus professor of chemistry at Sogang University, Lee is also noted for his contributions to public science communication.

Background and Context

The federation has faced a leadership void in recent months after the resignation of former chairman Lee Tae-sik, who stepped down amid corruption allegations. This has amplified the stakes for the upcoming election, as the new chair will be tasked with restoring confidence and direction within the organization.

Significance of the Election

The election holds additional weight as next year marks the federation’s 60th anniversary. This milestone underscores the importance of the new chair’s role in guiding the organization’s future amid evolving scientific and technological landscapes.

Profiles of the Candidates

Kwon Oh-nam

Professor Kwon has dedicated her career to enhancing mathematics education and has garnered international recognition for her innovative teaching methods, including the introduction of flipped learning at her university.

Park Ho-gun

With a long history in the public sector, Park was pivotal during his tenure as minister, focusing on policy development and scientific advancement.

Seo Pan-gil

Recognized as a leader in the field of bio-signal research, Seo has over 300 publications in leading scientific journals, highlighting his expertise and influence in the domain of life sciences.

Shin Seong-cheol

Shin has significantly impacted science education and diplomacy, advocating for talent development and interdisciplinary collaboration during his leadership roles.

Lee Deok-hwan

As a prominent communicator of scientific knowledge, Lee has authored several publications aimed at bridging the gap between science and society, contributing to public understanding of critical scientific issues.

With heightened interest surrounding this election, the upcoming weeks will be vital for candidates as they outline their visions and engage with members of the federation ahead of the voting date.
