A remarkable female GP shares her global experiences in pursuit of equality, coinciding with the RACGP’s International Women’s Day event series.
Empowering Leadership and Change
According to Dr Bhavya Balasubramanya, “An inspiring female leader is one who brings out the best in her team; she exudes fearlessness, confidence, and empowerment. She performs her magic quietly, through hard work, positive role modeling, and unwavering determination. She embodies kindness, compassion, and empathy, staying grounded and connected to her roots.”
As she speaks to newsGP in anticipation of International Women’s Day (IWD), Dr Balasubramanya emphasizes the importance of driving change and fostering equality, not just within the workplace but throughout society.
A Call to Advocate for Gender Equality
Based in Darwin, Dr Balasubramanya identifies as an “educated and empowered woman,” expressing her commitment to uplifting others while embracing this year’s IWD theme, “March Forward.” She encourages everyone to become advocates for gender equality, emphasizing its relevance not only in healthcare but deeply rooted in social determinants.
“I hope every woman finds her tribe to cheer her on, enabling her to reach greater heights and realize her dreams,” she said.
Global Influences and Career Path
Dr Balasubramanya credits her diverse upbringing for shaping her identity and work ethic. Having lived in the United States, United Kingdom, India, and now Australia, she describes herself as adaptable and curious about varying cultures, languages, cuisines, and healthcare systems.
After completing medical school, Dr Balasubramanya trained as a specialist in Bangalore. Initially torn between pursuing surgery or general practice, she eventually followed her instincts and chose to become a GP.
“I have never looked back; I absolutely love being a specialist GP,” she stated. “As the RACGP says, we are ‘specialists in life.’ The impact we have on families and generations is profound, and I cherish the connections with patients, learning from their stories every day.”
Passion for Rural Generalism
Currently practicing in a GP surgery in Darwin on Larrakia Country, Dr Balasubramanya is dedicated to rural generalism, skin cancer medicine, preventive health, and pregnancy care. She will share her insights at the Northern Territory segment of the RACGP’s International Women’s Day series on March 7, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, together with other inspiring female GP leaders in the Territory.
Building a Supportive Healthcare Environment
Believing in the importance of a robust future for female healthcare professionals, Dr Balasubramanya emphasizes several factors:
- A safe and supportive work environment that promotes wellbeing and mental health.
- Paid maternity leave, addressing the career trajectory disparities that arise due to biological differences.
- Fair compensation for female GPs who provide excellent care for patients requiring longer consultations.
“Most importantly, it’s about being valued and respected in the workplace,” she adds. “Achieving a good work-life balance allows women to juggle their various roles as partners, mothers, caregivers, doctors, daughters, friends, and mentors.”
