2025 FIDE World Cup Set for Goa, India

The 2025 FIDE World Cup is poised to take place in Goa, India, marking the first time in 25 years that the country has hosted this prestigious chess event. With an impressive roster of 206 participants, including a record 24 Indian players, the competition promises to be a historic spectacle.

Key Participants

Among the notable contenders from India are:

  • D Gukesh – Reigning World Champion
  • R Praggnanandhaa
  • Arjun Erigaisi
  • Nihal Sarin
  • Divya Deshmukh – Women’s World Cup Winner

Competition Schedule

The tournament will kick off on November 1, running until November 26. The schedule is structured as follows:

  • Round 1: November 1-3 (including tie-breakers)
  • Round 2: November 4-6 (including tie-breakers)
  • Round 3: November 7-9 (including tie-breakers)
  • Round 4: November 11-13 (including tie-breakers)
  • Round 5: November 14-16 (including tie-breakers)
  • Quarterfinals: November 17-19 (including tie-breakers)
  • Semifinals: November 21-23 (including tie-breakers)
  • Finals: November 24-26 (including tie-breakers)

Prize Structure

The total prize fund for the tournament is set at $2 million, with awards distributed as follows:

  • Champion: $120,000
  • Runner-up: $85,000
  • 3rd Place: $60,000
  • 4th Place: $50,000

The disparity in prize money is noteworthy; for instance, Divya Deshmukh, who won the Women’s Chess World Cup earlier this year, earned $50,000.

Tournament Format

The World Cup will adopt a two-game knockout format, with players competing head-to-head over eight rounds. Each round spans three days, comprising two classical games on the first two days and tie-breakers on the third day, if necessary. The top 50 players will receive byes in the first round, while those ranked from 51 to 206 will be paired based on a specific seeding principle. Notably, this tournament will also grant direct qualification for the top three finishers to the 2026 Candidates Tournament, which will determine the next challenger for the World Chess Championship.

Conclusion

The 2025 FIDE World Cup presents an exciting opportunity for chess enthusiasts, highlighting India’s growing prominence in the global chess arena. With a strong lineup of players and a substantial prize fund, the event is highly anticipated.
