Government Urges Caution in Online Relationships for Young Women
The Federal Government has issued a warning aimed at young women regarding the dangers of forming risky relationships via social media platforms. This caution comes amid an alarming rise in cases of digital exploitation, where individuals fall victim to deception and harm.
Ministerial Address Highlights Dangers
During the recent launch of the 2025 SET4LYF Leadership, Empowerment, Achievement, and Development Camp, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, provided insights into the risks associated with online interactions. The event took place in Abuja, where she was represented by Dr. Maryam Keshinro, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.
“In today’s digital age, be extremely cautious with relationships built on social media. Too many young girls have been lured, kidnapped, or killed by individuals posing online,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim warned, stressing the importance of discerning trust in digital spaces. She emphasized, “Trust must be earned, not downloaded.”
A Call for Vigilance
The minister specifically referenced the tragic case of Precious Alex, a 16-year-old who was lured through Instagram and tragically found dead in 2024. This incident stands as a stark reminder of the potential hazards of online interactions.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim urged young women to remain alert, prioritize their dignity, and keep their parents or guardians informed about their online engagements.
SET4LYF and NCAAP Initiatives
The SET4LYF initiative aims to empower over 10,500 adolescent girls across 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with an ambitious target of reaching 180,000 adolescents nationwide. The minister noted that these programs embody a synergy of policy and purpose, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda that foregrounds children and families in national development.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim remarked that “Policy must walk hand-in-hand with family values, the bedrock of character formation, empathy, and discipline,” further emphasizing the need for a robust foundation in youth development.
Program Components and Goals
Olaolu Akogun, the Country Director of SET4LYF Nigeria, elaborated on the program details, which aims to benefit “180,000 young people, inclusive of 70 per cent girls and 30 per cent boys,” over a four-year period. The program features various components such as:
- I-18 sessions
- JA-Company
- JA Digital Entrepreneurship Platform
These components are designed to equip participants with essential skills in innovation, leadership, and employment readiness.
Long-term Vision for Participants
Akogun highlighted the program’s long-term focus, stating, “This is not just a program for students while in school; it is a long-term pathway that transcends their time in secondary school.” Additionally, he noted that 70% of participants will have access to scholarships, placements in private tertiary institutions, and involvement in the Social Equity Program. Graduates will also benefit from JA Career Connect, a work readiness and job placement initiative.
