Reflections on Covering UNC Women’s Tennis
By Caroline Wills
Introduction to College Tennis
During my first year at the University of North Carolina (UNC), I attended a women’s tennis match against Duke at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club, which intrigued me about the sport and the environment surrounding college tennis.
Commitment to Coverage
Despite lacking a car, I dedicated myself to covering the women’s tennis team throughout the season. Utilizing public transport, I made frequent trips to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, documenting each match passionately.
As a one-person team, I wrote articles and game recaps, often from the Frank Porter Graham Student Union’s basement, analyzing blurry video streams. My commitment to delivering quality stories was driven by a deep passion for the sport.
The First Loss
UNC experienced a disappointing outcome when the Wolfpack defeated them, ending a streak of 29 victories. Facing my initial coverage of a loss was daunting, yet I persevered to conduct post-match interviews and draft my article, despite discomfort from sunburn.
NCAA Tournament Experience
My journey continued with a trip to Orlando, Florida, for the NCAA tournament. Accompanied by my mother, I navigated the intense heat while diligently preparing for the interviews that followed each match.
After the semifinals, I had a brief and familiar exchange with head coach Brian Kalbas, marking a memorable moment in my coverage journey.
Covering the Championship
A special edition of The Daily Tar Heel (DTH) highlighted UNC’s victory over N.C. State for the national title. I was the sole writer from the local area providing live coverage, culminating in my experience of attending my first national championship event and press conference.
That week, I authored eight articles, all featuring my byline, drawing appreciation from peers and coaches alike, reinforcing my dedication to sports journalism.
Growth as a Journalist
Over the years, I have reported on numerous matches, capturing both wins and losses, as well as celebrating further ACC championships. My experiences have not only broadened my writing portfolio but also included enduring several sunburns from reporting in the summer sun.
Even during my last season at the ACC tournament, I faced the familiar sting of sunburn while transitioning to clothing that concealed the evidence.
Bittersweet Farewells
As I wrapped up my final coverage of UNC women’s tennis at the NCAA semifinals in Waco, Texas, I reflected on the journey and wished for a tangible reminder of my time spent covering the team. Each article I wrote stands as a testament to my growth and dedication.
The personal stories of players like Abbey Forbes and Carson Tanguilig became significant elements of my reporting, illustrating the depth of my connection to the sport and the athletes.
