Crystal Mangum Admits to Falsely Accusing Duke Lacrosse Players
In a revelation that has drawn significant attention, Crystal Mangum, the woman who, in 2006, wrongfully asserted that three Duke University lacrosse players raped her, has publicly acknowledged that her claims were fabricated. This event, which ignited national discussions regarding race, class, and the privileges enjoyed by college athletes, still reverberates today.
During an interview on the “Let’s Talk with Kat” podcast, Mangum, who identifies as Black, openly stated, “I made up a story that wasn’t true” about the White players who were present at a party where she was employed as a stripper. She candidly expressed her motivations, claiming, “because I wanted validation from people and not from God.”
At 46 years old, Mangum reflected on her past actions, admitting, “I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t and that was wrong.” This significant confession was featured in an interview recorded last month at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where she is currently serving time for fatally stabbing her boyfriend in 2011.
Following the unraveling of Mangum’s allegations, the three Duke lacrosse players were officially declared innocent in 2007. Investigations led by the state attorney general’s office revealed that there was no credible evidence to support her claims of an assault, as they found no DNA, witnesses, or any corroborating evidence.
The prosecutor who initially backed Mangum’s case ultimately faced disbarment due to lying and misconduct during the proceedings. Interestingly, no charges were filed against Mangum for her false accusations.
During her podcast appearance, Mangum expressed a desire for forgiveness from the three men she falsely accused. “I want them to know that I love them and they didn’t deserve that,” she stated, highlighting her regret over the turmoil her actions caused.
Kat DePasquale, the Durham-based podcaster, mentioned that she reached out to Mangum out of curiosity regarding the high-profile case. Mangum responded, indicating her willingness to share her story on air.
