The Church Investors Group Advocates for Faith-Aligned Investing
The Church Investors Group (CIG), which represents various church organizations with a collective asset base of approximately £26 billion (€31 billion), is urging for an increased emphasis on faith-aligned investments. They have released a comprehensive guide aimed at encouraging asset managers to invest in ways that resonate with Christian values.
A Guide for Faith-Consistent Investment
Titled “Working with Your Investment Managers: A Guide to Support Church Investors Considering Faith-Consistent Approaches,” the new guide comes at a time when Christian leaders are eager to expand the market for faith-aligned investments rapidly.
Encouraging Sustainable Investment
“Our coalition of Church investors, holding more than £26 billion in assets, believes firmly in sustainable investment. However, we seek to foster an environment where our asset managers can also embrace our faith,” stated Stephen Beer, chair of trustees at CIG.
Beer emphasized, “Church investors should have access to investment solutions explicitly designed with Christian values in mind. Our goal is to help our members cultivate enduring partnerships with asset managers based on shared understanding, enabling both financial portfolios and humanity to thrive.”
Practical Steps for Church Investors
The guide provides practical strategies for CIG members—including the Church of England Pensions Board, the Methodist Ministers’ Pension Trust, and the United Reformed Church Ministers’ Pension Trust—to ensure their investment choices align with their beliefs. It aims to promote investments that also have a positive social or environmental impact.
Historically, the CIG has not shied away from taking a firm stance on pressing issues such as climate change and executive compensation.
Principles of Ethical Investing
Beer highlighted the significance of integrating Christian ethics alongside effective risk management for Church investors. He remarked, “This new guidance aims to empower Church and other Christian asset owners to articulate their ethical investment views and to provide them with a framework to embed these Christian values in their decision-making processes.”
Enhancing Communication with Asset Managers
Rory Sullivan, CEO of Chronos Sustainability and co-author of the guide, noted that the essence of their framework is to assist Christian investors in setting clear expectations for the asset managers who implement their investment mandates. He expressed hope that the guidance would send a strong message to the global investment community. “Although tailored for Christian organizations, this guide will also be beneficial for any mission-driven organization that aims to align its investments with its core values,” he remarked.
Empowering Faith-Based Investments
This initiative emphasizes the importance of investing rooted in faith, underlining the vital role such investments can play in promoting social and environmental welfare. The CIG’s commitment to responsible investing reflects a broader movement toward integrating ethical and faith-based principles into the financial landscape.
