Study Reveals Community Health Centers Outnumber Planned Parenthood Facilities
A recent analysis conducted by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, a pro-life think tank, challenges the commonly held belief that abortion providers like Planned Parenthood dominate the landscape of women’s health care in the United States.
Key Findings
The study indicates that community health centers (CHCs) significantly outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics at a ratio of 15 to 1. Specifically, the research found:
- 8,810 community health centers available nationwide.
- 579 Planned Parenthood facilities across all states and the District of Columbia.
Focus on Women’s Health Options
Tessa Cox, a lead researcher of the study, highlighted the importance of offering women alternatives for health care. She stated, “With research showing that nearly 70% of women who had abortions described them as unwanted or inconsistent with their preferences and values, we know that many women are looking for better options.”
“Community health centers give those options, providing care in underserved communities and filling critical health care gaps. Women deserve comprehensive care from providers who offer real health care, not abortion,” Cox added.
Political Implications
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., referenced this significant research during a recent gala hosted by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, expressing gratitude towards organizations that raise awareness about community health centers.
Johnson noted, “I’m so grateful that SBA and the Charlotte Lozier Institute have been so instrumental in raising awareness about these important centers, which provide comprehensive care for the vulnerable, and you know what, they outnumber big abortion providers 15 to 1, so that’s something we can celebrate.”
Defunding Planned Parenthood: Ongoing Discussions
Cox mentioned that this study arrives at a crucial time in Congress, where discussions about defunding Planned Parenthood, which received approximately $700 million in federal funding for the year 2024, are underway.
“We wanted to provide some estimates of all of the community health centers around the country that offer women’s health, and then compare them to Planned Parenthood, which is the largest abortion chain, to really provide that context as people were thinking about what are the options for where women can get care,” Cox explained.
Understanding Community Health Centers
The analyzed community health centers are federal entities that provide various services and are categorized as either federally qualified health centers or rural health clinics.
Cox emphasized the broad range of services these centers offer, stating, “There’s this whole universe of them, and they provide care for the whole family—everything from family medicine to behavioral health, pediatrics, dental care, really, everything in between.”
Conclusion
While the study focused on the 8,810 community health centers that provide women’s health services, Cox acknowledged that there are additional pro-life services not included in this number, such as the approximately 3,000 pregnancy centers nationwide.
However, she stressed that further efforts are essential to enhance health care access for expectant mothers, concluding, “There’s always a need for more pregnancy centers and making sure that the health care is accessible to moms and babies and families when they need it.”
