Seattle’s Rough & Tumble Bar Expands With New Location
Seattle is set to welcome a new addition to its vibrant sports bar scene, as Rough & Tumble announces the opening of its second location in Columbia City next month. This establishment is uniquely dedicated to promoting women’s sports, reflecting a growing demand for inclusive spaces for fans.
Expansion Following Success
Since opening its first location in Ballard in 2022, Jen Barnes, the founder, observed a notable gap in venues that equally celebrated both genders in sports. This new venture stems from the positive reception and market validation of women’s sports appreciation.
“We’ve proven that women’s sports fans are a viable market and far more than a movement or a moment,” stated Barnes on the bar’s website. “Prioritizing gender equality isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s smart, sustainable business that redefines how women are valued far beyond sports.”
Details of the Columbia City Bar
The Columbia City location aims to mirror the vibrant aesthetic of the Ballard bar, featuring a green tiled bar, ample natural lighting through large windows, and a lively design. It will be situated within the Columbia City Ale House on Rainier Avenue South, as confirmed by The Washington Beer Blog.
Lesle Gallimore, General Manager of the Seattle Reign FC, expressed enthusiasm about the new bar, emphasizing its role in fostering a welcoming environment for fans. “Rough & Tumble is about celebrating all of women’s sports and creating safe, inclusive spaces where fans can come together, connect, and be inspired. This is a powerful moment for our community,” she remarked.
Broader Movement in Women’s Sports Bars
Seattle is not alone in this initiative. Portland is home to the world’s first bar dedicated to airing exclusively women’s sports, known as The Sports Bra, which opened its doors in April 2022. This establishment has ambitious plans, with future locations expected in cities such as Boston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and St. Louis.
Growing Popularity of Women’s Sports
Recent statistics highlight the increasing popularity of women’s sports. The WNBA has experienced a remarkable surge in viewership, achieving a 170% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. Notably, star Caitlin Clark’s debut on ESPN garnered an average of over 2 million viewers. Furthermore, even with Clark facing injuries in 2025, viewership continued to rise by 3%, demonstrating the robust interest in women’s sports.
