Nigeria Women Football League Enhances Financial Support for 2025 Super 6 Tournament

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced a significant financial incentive for the 2025 Premiership Super 6 tournament, rolling out a total prize pool of ₦24.5 million. This initiative is designed to enhance support for female football clubs across Nigeria.

Prize Distribution Overview

According to a statement from Samuel Ahmadu, the NWFL Media Director, the champions will continue to receive ₦10 million, maintaining the prize structure from the previous two seasons. The financial rewards for the runners-up and third-place teams have been increased, with the former now set to earn ₦6 million and the latter ₦4 million—an increase of ₦1 million from the previous year.

Increased Support for All Teams

In a noteworthy move towards inclusivity, all bottom three teams in the tournament will now receive ₦1.5 million each, a substantial rise from the ₦500,000 awarded in the last iteration of the championship. This development indicates the league’s commitment to financially supporting all participating clubs.

Aligning with Professionalization Goals

Nkechi Obi, Chairperson of the NWFL, highlighted that the revised prize structure aligns with the league’s mission to professionalize women’s football in Nigeria. She stated, “This is a deliberate step to ensure that all clubs leave the NWFL Premiership Super 6 with something tangible.” Obi pointed out that by increasing financial rewards, especially for lower-ranked teams, the league aims to encourage further investment at the club level.

Pathway to Continental Competitions

Beyond the immediate financial incentives, the winner of the 2025 Super 6 tournament will secure Nigeria’s lone spot in the WAFU Zone B qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League. This represents an exciting opportunity for teams aiming to compete on a continental scale and possibly qualify for the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Championship by reaching the final.

Current Title Race Update

As the tournament approaches its final matchday on May 17, the title race remains competitive. Four clubs—Bayelsa Queens, defending champions Edo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Remo Stars Ladies—are still in contention for the coveted title.
