Event Overview
The annual Ogden Wellness Weekend 5K Walk, sponsored by WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital, witnessed an impressive performance from local participant Stefanie Evonek. Setting a remarkable time of 35 minutes and 21 seconds, Evonek not only secured victory but also shone brightly in her debut appearance in the event held in Wheeling.
Evonek’s Journey
At 51, Evonek’s journey to this victory is notable. She explained, “This is my first Ogden 5K. I’ve done 5Ks before. I used to run all of the time, but my knees got bad, and I had both knees replaced. So I started power walking and doing some 5Ks.” Despite her desire to run the half marathon for over 30 years, she had to adapt her approach due to health issues.
Challenges and Triumphs
Evonek’s long-held ambition finally came to fruition, as she stated, “I’ve wanted to do the Ogden for over 30 years, but I wanted to do the half marathon and run. Because of my knees and some other health issues, I couldn’t. But after 30 some years of hoping I could be in the Ogden, I’m finally in it. It’s exciting.” Her perseverance and ability to overcome obstacles were evident as she maintained her lead throughout the event.
Training and Strategy
Evonek credited her rigorous training that involved walking on hilly terrain, which equipped her to tackle the largely flat 5K course effectively. “Where I practice at home, it has a lot of hills,” she noted. “I like walking up hills, and I think that contributes to stamina and strength when you’re walking.” This preparation played a crucial role in her success on race day, especially when the course presented a slight incline toward Jacob Street.
Conclusion
Stefanie Evonek’s inspiring victory in the Ogden Wellness Weekend 5K Walk reflects not only her athletic abilities but also her unwavering spirit. Her story serves as a reminder of resilience, highlighting how one can adapt and thrive despite challenges.
