Navigating the world of dietary supplements can be overwhelming, particularly as women transition through various life stages. However, the importance of particular nutrients becomes more pronounced as women age, especially after the age of 30.

To gain insight into the most crucial supplement for women over 30, we consulted Jacqueline A. Vernarelli, PhD, an expert in public health nutrition and an associate professor at Sacred Heart University.

Below are excerpts from her insights regarding supplements for women’s health during this critical period.

Essential Supplements for Women Over 30

According to Dr. Vernarelli, “My number one recommendation for women over 30 is a calcium + vitamin D supplement.” She emphasizes that calcium is vital for maintaining strong bones and overall health during this phase of life. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption, making it essential for bone health.

As women progress past 30, natural bone mass begins to decline, leading to an increased risk of osteoporosis. Dr. Vernarelli likens calcium in the bones to a savings account, where adequate deposits during youth will sustain health in later years.

In younger years, the body contains more bone-building cells than bone-remodeling cells. However, after age 30, this balance shifts, requiring more focus on calcium intake.

Calcium and Menopause: A Closer Look

During the transition to menopause, estrogen levels decline, which accelerates bone density loss. Dr. Vernarelli notes that adequate calcium intake becomes increasingly important at this stage to mitigate the impact of lowered estrogen levels.

Calcium also plays a critical role in muscle function, including heart health. As muscle performance may wane with age, calcium is essential for proper muscle contractions, thereby reducing cramping and enhancing strength.

Recommended Calcium Intake for Women Over 30

For women aged 31 to 50, the recommended daily intake of calcium is approximately 1,000 mg. After the age of 50, this recommendation increases to around 1,200 mg per day. It is crucial to combine calcium intake with vitamin D to optimize absorption and health benefits.
