Indian women experience it distinctively, and it’s crucial to recognize the need for a new perspective on midlife care in India.” Statistically, Indian women enter menopause approximately five years earlier than Caucasian women, generally at around 46.7 years of age, compared to the global average of 51 years. This highlights the urgency of taking proactive steps toward midlife health.
Health Risks During Menopause
As women approach menopause, the risks of heart disease increase, and bone density tends to decline more rapidly. This is particularly pronounced in Indian women, who often already face low levels of vitamin D. Makhija emphasizes the silence surrounding menopause, stating, “While the topic is rarely discussed globally, it is especially overlooked in Indian culture. We must change the narrative. Midlife care should not be about merely enduring menopause; it should focus on thriving through it.”
The Importance of Seeking Help
Makhija also points out that Indian women are less inclined to seek treatment for menopause symptoms compared to women in Western countries.
