Empowering African Women through STEM Scholarships

Every year, a variety of organizations allocate funding for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) scholarships targeted at African women. These scholarships aim to support talented individuals who aspire to excel in these fields and contribute to global advancements. Here are some notable scholarships available annually for women in STEM and related disciplines.

1. Women Techmakers Scholars Programme

This prestigious program, previously known as the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Dr. Anita Borg. It encourages women to excel in computing and technology while fostering gender equality in these sectors.

2. Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarships

Offered in the United States, this one-year scholarship supports outstanding graduate women students aiming for a PhD in fields such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics, thereby increasing female representation in these high-demand areas.

3. Schlumberger Foundation Fellowship

The Faculty for the Future fellowships, established by the Schlumberger Foundation, are awarded to women from developing economies preparing for PhD or postdoctoral studies in the physical sciences and related disciplines at esteemed universities worldwide.

4. MasterCard Foundation Scholarships at Wellesley College

This initiative provides comprehensive scholarships, mentoring, and internship opportunities for nine African women, helping them build critical skills and experiences necessary for navigating the global economy.

5. Otherwise Foundation Awards

Jointly offered by The Elsevier Foundation, TWAS, and OWSD, these awards support early-career women scientists from developing countries, enhancing the visibility of their work and fostering new opportunities.

6. SAWISE Hope & Angus Scholarship

The Association of South African Women in Science and Engineering invites female students entering their Honours year to apply for this scholarship, prioritizing candidates facing financial challenges.

7. UNODA Women Scholarship for Peace

Coordinated by the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, this scholarship addresses disarmament and development-related technologies and is open to women from the Global South.

8. AAUW International Fellowship

Available for women who are not U.S. citizens, the AAUW International Fellowship supports full-time study or research in the United States across various graduate and postgraduate programs.

9. Campbell Fellowship

This fellowship supports female postdoctoral social scientists from developing nations whose work focuses on women’s economic and social empowerment.

10. Amelia Earhart Fellowship

Zonta International offers this fellowship for women pursuing PhD research in aerospace-related fields, providing up to $10,000 in support for their educational endeavors.

11. WAAW Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships

The Working to Advance African Women (WAAW) Foundation aims to increase the representation of African women in STEM through dedicated scholarships to students in related disciplines.

12. Women in Aviation Scholarships

13. Professor De Winter International Masters Scholarships
