Understanding Egg Freezing: Empowering Women’s Reproductive Choices

Last Updated: November 23, 2025, 14:21 IST

The Normalization of Egg Freezing

Egg freezing has emerged as a mainstream option for women, driven by technological advancements, enhanced awareness, and changing societal norms regarding fertility. Recent testimonials from public figures, such as Upasana Konidela and Sania Mirza, have significantly contributed to the acceptance of this procedure. This shift allows women in India to take a proactive approach towards their reproductive futures, moving beyond traditional timelines.

How Technology is Changing Reproductive Options

According to Dr. Preeti Mahawar, a Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility in Kolkata, “Vitrification keeps the egg at the same quality as the day it was frozen.” This advanced preservation technique minimizes cellular damage, ensuring that eggs remain viable regardless of how much time passes before they are used. India’s ART Act permits the storage of frozen eggs for a maximum of ten years, extendable in certain circumstances, such as cancer treatment.

Dr. Nayana D H, a Consultant in IVF at Aster Whitefield Hospital in Bengaluru, highlights a cultural shift: “Women today marry later and prioritize careers and financial stability. Egg freezing empowers them to customize their family planning to fit their life goals.”

Who Should Consider Egg Freezing?

Though elective, egg freezing is ideally pursued under certain health considerations. Dr. Mahawar emphasizes the need to address specific medical conditions such as uncontrolled thyroid levels, high blood sugar, or elevated BMI before proceeding. Most women can maintain their daily routines during the hormone stimulation phase, which lasts about 10 to 12 days.

Age remains a critical factor in the success of the procedure. Dr. Nayana notes that women under 35 are generally more likely to have genetically robust eggs, advising that early intervention may be necessary if indicators like a shortened menstrual cycle arise.

The Process of Egg Freezing

The egg freezing process is both straightforward and minimally invasive. After initial assessments, women typically self-administer hormone injections for about ten days, complemented by brief clinic visits. The egg retrieval takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes under anesthesia and is notably painless. Women often return home the same day.

While vitrification ensures eggs are preserved for future use, both specialists reiterate that egg freezing is not a definite solution for achieving pregnancy. Factors such as sperm quality and the woman’s overall health at the time of in vitro fertilization (IVF) also play significant roles in the outcome.

Costs of Egg Freezing in India

The cost of egg freezing in India typically ranges from Rs 1.5 to 3 lakh. Several variables can influence this price, including the dosage of hormones used, the number of eggs retrieved, and the clinic’s facilities. Furthermore, some companies are beginning to recognize the importance of employee reproductive health by offering egg freezing as part of their wellness benefits.

Success Rates and Safety Considerations

Success rates for egg freezing are closely tied to the woman’s age at the time of the procedure. Women who freeze their eggs before age 35 have about a 60% chance of achieving a live birth later, whereas this figure drops to between 20% and 30% after age 40. Most side effects associated with the procedure are mild, often involving temporary bloating or mood swings.

Conclusion: A New Era for Women’s Choices

As egg freezing continues to gain acceptance and technological proficiency, it stands as a powerful option for women looking to take charge of their reproductive health. While it does not guarantee future pregnancy, it provides invaluable time and choice, allowing women to pursue their personal and professional aspirations without compromising their reproductive potential.
