International Women’s Day (IWD) serves as a global celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments, advocating for accelerated gender equality.
In light of this year’s IWD theme hashtag #AccelerateAction, a group of talented women from Taylor Wimpey East Scotland shared their professional experiences within the housebuilding sector with young women at Queensferry High School.
This visit marks the first of two initiatives designed to motivate young women to explore careers in the construction industry. A follow-up visit to the nearby Hawthorn Gardens development is on the schedule, providing students with hands-on experience of a working construction site and practical skills such as bricklaying.
Emmy Martin, the production manager at Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, expressed: “Our young female team members exemplify the strides we’ve made toward making the housebuilding sector a welcoming space for everyone, irrespective of gender. Bringing Laura, Rebecca, and Caitlin together at Queensferry High School created a perfect opportunity to inspire future women leaders in the industry.”
“Our team’s firsthand experiences as accomplished women in a traditionally male-dominated field were impactful and engaging, revealing to the students the diverse career pathways available in housebuilding. We eagerly await welcoming them to our local development at Hawthorn Gardens for a more immersive experience.”
Michael Fong, the Developing the Young Workforce School Coordinator at Queensferry High, noted: “The opportunity for our S3 female students to engage with an all-female team from Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, shedding light on roles typically viewed as male-dominated, was enlightening for all involved.”
“Housebuilding presents a myriad of opportunities, and young women should feel empowered to explore every available role. From trades and surveying to sales, marketing, and more—there’s a vast landscape of career options. We are thrilled to partner with Taylor Wimpey East Scotland and look forward to visiting them at the Hawthorn Gardens development.”
