Empowering Women in Tech: Solutech’s Mentorship Initiative

Overview of the Initiative
Solutech Limited, a prominent software solutions provider, in collaboration with Tech Sisters Kenya, has organized a mentorship program aimed at reducing the gender imbalance in the technology sector.
Coding Challenge and Selection
This initiative arises from the #CodeConnectMentor coding challenge, which convened 20 aspiring young women at Solutech’s headquarters. Out of these, fifteen showcased their coding abilities and innovative problem-solving skills.
Following the competition, three standout participants were chosen to embark on a three-month mentorship program with Solutech, commencing in September.
Program Details
The mentorship program is designed to deliver practical training, guidance, and networking opportunities with seasoned developers at Solutech.
According to Solutech, “Through a structured approach, Solutech mentors will walk alongside participants, ensuring that by the end of the program, they are equipped with knowledge, clarity on their strengths, and the confidence to make an impact in the tech community.”
Addressing Gender Disparities in Tech
Despite advances, women remain underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). UNESCO indicates that women make up less than 35 percent of STEM students globally, while only about 17 percent of ICT specialists in sub-Saharan Africa are female.
In Kenya, the figures are similarly disheartening, with women constituting approximately 20–25 percent of computer science students, and even fewer pursuing long-term careers in the field.
Aiming for Change
By connecting young women with mentorship and hands-on workplace experience, Solutech and Tech Sisters Kenya are working towards closing the gender gap in Kenya’s tech industry and fostering a strong pipeline of future talent.
Experts assert that such mentorship initiatives are increasingly integrated into corporate strategies as a means to enhance workforce diversity and mitigate skills shortages in the region’s burgeoning digital economy.
