Empowering Women for Inclusive Governance in Nigeria

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has emphasized the necessity for Nigerian women to intensify their involvement in governance and the economy during a recent town hall meeting held in Abuja.

Commitment to Inclusion and Development

During the event, Sulaiman-Ibrahim articulated, “The reason why we are here is because we want what is best for ourselves, for the Nigerian women, for our community, for our families.” This statement highlights the vital need for collective action among women to foster national development.

Advocating for Fair Representation

The minister acknowledged the significance of the proposed special reserve seats bill, which aims to enhance women’s representation in the Nigerian National Assembly. She urged women to adopt strategic and united approaches in their quest for political and economic empowerment.

Negotiation and Unity Among Women

“We are the voting strength of this country; we and our children. That gives us the permission to negotiate for anything because we will stick to our words. We have to be masters in negotiating,” stated Sulaiman-Ibrahim. She stressed the importance of collaboration, urging women to mentor each other and avoid splitting votes in elections.

Community Support and Collaborative Spirit

Hauwa Ibrahim, the wife of the Ona of Abaji and president of the FCT Traditional Rulers Wives Association, commended the inclusive nature of the meeting. She underscored the importance of unity among women in fostering sustainable changes within communities. Ibrahim remarked that the minister’s initiatives resonate strongly across traditional institutions and among women leaders nationwide.

Optimism for Future Opportunities

Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, who serves as the mandate secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, expressed a positive outlook regarding advancements for women under the current administration. She praised the minister’s vision of unity towards achieving common goals.

Women in Trade and Agriculture

Ruth Agbo, president of the Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture, recognized the resilience of Nigerian women and their capacity to enhance agricultural productivity and trade. However, she noted the need for adequate resources and support to fully harness these abilities.

Dedication to Progress

Maryam Keshinro, the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, emphasized the commitment displayed by women during the engagement, illustrating their resolve to take control of their futures. She is confident that the concepts and pledges discussed will lead to tangible advancements for women in Nigeria.
