Explore the Vulva Forest Walk: An Artistic Tribute to Women’s Health
On August 9 and 10, the serene forests of Walter’s Falls will become a vibrant showcase of art and advocacy during the second edition of the Vulva Forest Walk. This unique event highlights the intersection of creativity, women’s health, and sexuality, promising attendees a transformative experience.
About the Event
The Vulva Forest Walk invites participants to journey through a forest adorned with artistic interpretations of vulvas. The event, organized by Fran Bouwman—who is also the founder of Viva la Flying Vulva—will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, featuring contributions from 15 diverse artists, musicians, and performers.
Fran Bouwman’s Mission
Bouwman’s vision encompasses more than just artistic expression; it aims to celebrate the vulva as a symbol of life, creativity, and empowerment. With a background in art, education, music, and philosophy, she points out that the vulva has often been neglected in contemporary discourse, leading to a lack of understanding and respect.
As noted in a press release, “The erasure of this word has had profound effects on women’s health, esteem, and sexuality. This event is a reclamation of women’s holistic intelligence, beauty, wisdom, and power.”
Artistic Highlights
The Vulva Forest Walk will feature a range of installations, including:
- A 20-foot floating vulva balloon sculpture, which will be a centerpiece above the Oxytocin Flow Dance performed by Sharon Johnson and Dana Burmaster.
- The “Spirit of the Vulva,” a fire sculpture honoring women from history, providing a space for reflection and dialogue about vulva awareness and self-esteem.
Event Activities
The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming everyone to engage with the artwork and conversation. Attendees can enjoy:
- Vulva-themed waffles
- Stick-on vulva tattoos
- A vulva bean bag toss
- Interactive circles for discussion and sharing
Merchandise from Viva la Flying Vulva, including T-shirts and coloring books, will also be available. Entry to the event is free, although donations for local charities are encouraged. Refreshments will be provided, and guests are reminded to bring reusable water bottles for hydration.
Join the Movement
As part of a larger resurgence in vulva advocacy, the Vulva Forest Walk serves as a celebration of women’s strength and identity. Attendees will not only enjoy art and nature but also engage in a movement that empowers and educates about women’s health.
