Women’s Health Month: Prioritizing Cardiovascular Health and Screenings

As we observe Women’s Health Month in May, healthcare professionals emphasize the need for women of all ages to take proactive measures for their well-being. Simple lifestyle changes can significantly impact long-term health.

Understanding the Leading Health Threats

According to Dr. Heather Figueroa, an OB-GYN affiliated with Corewell Health in St. Joseph, cardiovascular health stands as the most pressing health issue for women today. “The number one killer of women is actually cardiovascular health,” Dr. Figueroa noted. She reinforces that small daily adjustments can profoundly affect a woman’s longevity and health quality.

Key Lifestyle Changes

To improve cardiovascular health, Dr. Figueroa recommends the following:

  • Engaging in regular physical activity, such as walking.
  • Reducing salt and sugar intake.
  • Maintaining regular health check-ups.

These steps can help monitor health issues, including cancer risks, that often go unnoticed.

The Importance of Regular Screenings

Dr. Figueroa emphasizes the importance of routine medical evaluations, explaining that many women tend to delay health appointments. “I find that a lot of women put off their health for a variety of reasons,” she remarked. Establishing consistent check-ins is crucial for early detection and treatment of health issues.

Screening Guidelines

For effective prevention, the following screening schedules are typically recommended:

  • Cervical cancer screenings should begin at age 21.
  • Mammograms should generally start around age 40, though this may change based on family history.

Dr. Figueroa advises earlier screenings for women with a family history of cancer to enhance preventive measures.
