Empowering Women Through Community and Fitness
This organization is dedicated to nurturing connections and friendships while encouraging individuals on their fitness journeys. It provides a range of events, including workshops and an annual banquet, designed to engage and inspire members.
Pretty Girls Sweat: A Catalyst for Wellness
Since its inception on campus in fall 2015, Pretty Girls Sweat has emerged as a vital force advocating for women’s health and wellness education. Founded by three passionate women—Ananna N. Kazi ‘17, Gabrielle J. Sagesse ‘17, and Jahan K. Rivers ‘17—Binghamton University’s chapter has fostered a thriving and supportive community.
A Vision for Health and Confidence
“They aimed to create an environment where women could focus on their health while building self-esteem in a caring community,” shared Tiffany Ajijola, the vice president and a biology senior, in an email. “Through their dedication, they successfully introduced the PGS initiative to Binghamton University, offering a setting for students to concentrate on both their physical health and mental empowerment.”
Building a Healthy Lifestyle Together
The organization’s primary goal is to promote healthy living while cultivating a strong sense of community and friendship among its members. “We encourage and support women on their journeys to achieving a healthy lifestyle, no matter how each individual envisions it,” wrote Gianna Peña, the president and a senior majoring in psychology, in an email. “On Binghamton’s campus, we strive to create a safe, motivating environment where women feel comfortable participating in our workouts, engaging in candid discussions, and embracing our sisterhood.”
Connecting Through Collaboration
The Executive Board of Pretty Girls Sweat holds weekly meetings to plan upcoming events and opportunities, allowing members to connect—this bond is integral to the organization’s mission. Ajijola noted that after planning their events, members often share personal moments, concerns, and laughter, enhancing their connections.
“It’s a great balance of productivity and team bonding,” she added. “I love starting our E-board meetings with a thoughtful quote and a personal share, which fosters a deeper connection. At the end, we discuss our highs and lows of the week, providing each other an opportunity for reflection and support.”
Popular Events to Inspire Engagement
Among the popular events are HIIT (high-intensity interval training) sessions, pilates, yoga, and a competitive obstacle course event dubbed “Survival of the FITtest.” However, fitness is just one facet of their campus involvement. The organization is also celebrated for hosting their annual Pink Brunch—a tea party-themed event featuring performances by student groups and awards for students, alumni, and supporters.
Welcoming New Ideas and Members
Pretty Girls Sweat is eager to expand its reach and welcomes new ideas, whether through innovative approaches, educational seminars, or offering free samples. Peña emphasized the importance of cultivating an inviting atmosphere for all women.
“I always stress to potential members that you don’t need to be a fitness fanatic to be part of our organization or attend our events,” Peña wrote. “What’s essential is your desire to be around a community of like-minded women working towards healthier and happier lives—supporting yourself and one another. We embody a laid-back group that includes everyone. Whether you participate in every workout or just one or two a semester, we are delighted to have you join us.”
