University’s Empowering Event for Women’s Rights
The Social Justice Society at the university organized an impactful event at the Unique Fitness sports center on campus, supporting the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
Champion’s Call to Action
Tasif, a super flyweight world champion hailing from Bradford and a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the university in 2021, emphasized the importance of voicing against violence directed at women.
He shared, “My father taught us to respect women, and I am proud to support initiatives that reinforce this message. There is still much work to be done; discussing these issues is crucial. It helps women tap into a broader network and gain valuable knowledge, which I believe is power.”
Student Voices United
During the event, Tasif connected with Master’s student Alaa Abdullah, who recently graduated with a focus in cancer drug discovery, and first-year counseling student Nimra Hassan from Kirklees College.
Alaa spoke about her upbringing, stating, “My father taught me to be a strong woman and to voice my concerns. We must always be vigilant and outspoken about violence against women.”
Nimra echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the ongoing issue of domestic violence. “Many women face restrictions on their movements, clothing, and aspirations, constantly facing judgment,” she pointed out.
Strength in Solidarity
Samea Mehboob, the president of the Social Justice Society, expressed pride in participating in the UN’s 16 Days of Activism. “This is the first event of its kind in Bradford, and we are grateful for the support of influential figures like Tasif and rugby player Ikram Butt, who joined us to share their insights,” she said.
Inspirational Talks and Self-Defense
Aside from leading self-defense classes and discussing the vital need to eliminate violence against women, Tasif also shared his journey to success. Ikram Butt, who made history as the first British Asian to play for England in rugby during the 1990s, spoke passionately about his commitment to fighting against violence towards women.
Campaign Dates
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign commenced on November 25 and will continue until December 10, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and action against such violence.
