Empowering Women Through Self-Help Groups: Modi’s Independence Day Address
Transformative Impact of Women’s Self-Help Groups
On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the remarkable achievements of women’s self-help groups (SHGs), describing their evolution from peripheral roles to becoming significant contributors in entrepreneurship and exports. He highlighted that the economic contributions from these groups amount to “lakhs of crores” and are now reaching international markets.
Breaking Barriers and Creating Opportunities
During his address, Modi pointed out the lack of attention previously given to SHGs and asserted that the past decade has seen these organizations achieve extraordinary progress. He stated, “Nobody paid attention to women self-help groups, but in the past 10 years, they have done wonders.”
Shifting Focus to Local Manufacturing
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed his commitment to fostering local talent and manufacturing capabilities. Reflecting on a past discussion in his radio program, Mann Ki Baat, he stated, “I once spoke in Mann Ki Baat about toys…I had said, why should even toys come from abroad? And today, I proudly say that my country has started exporting toys.”
