SDSU Celebrates Women’s Athletics at Annual Fund Luncheon
San Diego State Athletics recently held its annual Women’s Fund Luncheon, a successful gathering that united student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and community supporters to honor the achievements driving women’s sports at SDSU.
A Commitment to Women’s Sports
Established in 2022 as part of the commemoration of Title IX’s 50th anniversary, the Women’s Fund aims to promote equity, opportunity, and growth across all women’s Division I sports. This year’s luncheon highlighted its impact by recognizing three exemplary figures whose contributions have significantly advanced women’s athletics at the university.
Honorees of the Luncheon
Jenny Bramer, SDSU’s Deputy Athletic Director, remarked, “This year’s luncheon was a powerful reminder of how true leadership is defined by lifting up others.” Each honoree serves as a role model, showcasing how empowerment can provoke positive change within communities through sports.
Aztec Impact on Women in Sports Award
The prestigious Aztec Impact on Women in Sports Award was presented to Stacey Nuveman Deniz, who stands out for her dedication to women’s athletics through exemplary coaching and mentorship. A member of the Olympic Hall of Fame and a three-time Olympian, Nuveman Deniz has spent 17 seasons as SDSU’s head softball coach, earning accolades such as two Mountain West Coach of the Year awards and leading the team to their first NCAA Super Regional.
Her commitment extends beyond wins; Nuveman Deniz is widely recognized for fostering strong relationships with her players, mentoring those who have earned over 80 all-conference honors during her tenure. Her influence also reaches into professional leagues and USA Softball, reinforcing the importance of sports in personal development.
SDSU Athletics Women’s Fund Rising Star Award
The Rising Star Award was given to Sydney Gish, a senior water polo player known for her leadership and dedication. As an Honorable Mention in the Golden Coast Conference and an accomplished academic achiever, Gish has made significant contributions to SDSU by participating in several initiatives, including Aztecs Going Pro and the Women’s Fund, enhancing student-athlete development and event planning.
SDSU Athletics Women’s Fund CHAMPION Award
President Adela de la Torre was honored with the CHAMPION award, recognizing her substantial support and advocacy for women in sports. De la Torre’s involvement includes financial contributions and role modeling, creating a lasting impact on female student-athletes. She expressed her commitment to mentoring future generations, attributing her values of hard work and perseverance to the strong women who influenced her life.
