Women on Wheels Event in Topeka Empowers Car Enthusiasts
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – On Saturday, September 13, car enthusiasts gathered at the 5th annual Women on Wheels event, organized by KTWU. This popular gathering attracted women from across Topeka who proudly showcased their vehicles.
Celebrating Women in Automotive
Valerie VanDerSluis, the general manager of KTWU, highlighted the event’s primary goal: “The inspiration is to give women an opportunity to showcase their creativity and hard work, you know, women love their cars too, and they want to be able to showcase them.” The event not only serves as a platform for women to exhibit their love for cars but also fosters a sense of community among participants.
Fundraising for KTWU
In addition to celebrating automotive enthusiasm, Women on Wheels plays a vital role in fundraising for KTWU. The event is crucial for the station’s programming and operations, especially following a complete loss of federal funding experienced last July. “We did experience a loss in federal funding,” said VanDerSluis. “100% loss last July, and so right now what we’re doing is finding ways to be able to help recuperate that money.”
KTWU aims to compensate for nearly $1 million in additional funding required each year due to these cuts. Fortunately, community support has been substantial, making a significant difference. “It is quite a feat, but we have had such a generous outpouring of support from some wonderful members and community members, viewers organizations, and we appreciate all of them so much for their support,” said VanDerSluis.
Event Sponsors
This year’s Women on Wheels event was made possible thanks to various sponsors, including:
- Midwest Dream Car Collection
- Stumpy’s
- Curly Top Customs
- Absolute Design by Brenda
- Lux Auto Detailing
The success of the Women on Wheels event is a testament to the passion women have for cars and the strong community support that sustains KTWU’s programming.
