Empowering Women in STEM: The Launch of Women in Technology and Science at Ursinus College
Introduction to WiTS
Ursinus College is excited to introduce a new organization: the Women in Technology and Science (WiTS) club. This initiative aims to create a supportive environment for female students pursuing majors in science and technology.
Purpose and Objectives
According to Morgan McCracken, the founding president of WiTS and a sophomore majoring in Biology and minoring in Psychology, the club provides a much-needed space for women studying in these fields. She explains, “It can be very difficult, stressful, and time-consuming to be a woman in a science or technology-related major.” WiTS seeks to alleviate some of this pressure by allowing women to unwind and connect over their shared interests.
Community and Empowerment
McCracken emphasizes that WiTS is not just about study; it is also about fostering community. “Women grouping and meeting together can help them feel less alone while pursuing such difficult fields,” she adds. The club aims to empower its members to persevere in their academic journeys and provides an avenue for stress relief and socialization.
Club Activities
WiTS plans to hold meetings once or twice each month, featuring a variety of engaging events. This fall semester, members can look forward to:
- A science-themed coloring night
- Game nights featuring trivia, Kahoots, and bingo
The club is inclusive, welcoming women from various academic backgrounds, not limited to traditional fields like Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. McCracken notes that even those minoring in science-related disciplines are encouraged to join.
Diverse Fields of Study
Ursinus offers an extensive array of programs for women interested in science and technology, including:
- Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Pre-Medicine
- Pre-Health
- Environmental Science
- Health Science
- Marine Science
- Public Health
- Computer Science
McCracken, alongside her executive board, which includes Vice President Madison Smith, Secretary Jess Sokolski, and Treasurer Hayley Kane, are committed to making WiTS a thriving and dynamic part of the Ursinus community.
Conclusion and Invitation
Ursinus College encourages students to keep an eye out for upcoming WiTS events and consider joining. The club promises to be a valuable resource for women in STEM, offering both a respite from the rigors of their studies and a chance to build lasting connections.
