Empowering Women in STEM: The WISE-KIRAN Initiative

The Indian government is actively working to enhance women’s participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields through a comprehensive program known as the Women in Science and Engineering – KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN) initiative. This initiative was designed to address and reduce the current gender gap in STEM careers by implementing multiple supportive measures specifically targeted at women scientists and engineers.

Key Components of the WISE-KIRAN Initiative

A major part of the WISE-KIRAN initiative includes a variety of fellowship programs aimed at supporting women in research. Notably:

  • WISE-PhD Fellowship: Designed for women engaged in basic and applied sciences, this fellowship offers both mentorship and financial support, enabling them to focus on their education and drive advancements in research.
  • WISE-Post Doctoral Fellowship (WISE-PDF) and WISE-SCOPE: These programs encourage women to continue their research post-doctorally, providing vital resources for a successful transition from doctoral studies to advanced research positions.

Support for Experienced Scientists

The WIDUSHI Program addresses the needs of older women scientists, including those who may be retired or currently unemployed. This initiative aims to reintegrate them into the scientific community, recognizing the immense value of their experience and expertise.

Mentorship and Intellectual Property Training

To fortify the foundation for women in scientific professions, the government also provides mentorship and financial assistance through various programs, including:

  • WISE-IPR Program: This component focuses on intellectual property rights, offering one-year on-the-job training specifically for women in IPR. Understanding IPR is crucial for women to safeguard their innovations and research outcomes.

The training equips women with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of intellectual property rights, fostering their contributions to scientific innovation and entrepreneurship.

Inspiring Women from a Young Age

Another significant facet of the WISE-KIRAN effort is the Vigyan Jyoti program, which targets girls from grades IX to XII. This initiative encourages young females to consider careers in STEM by providing mentoring and guidance, emphasizing crucial early intervention to positively influence their career aspirations.

Fostering Innovation and Support for Entrepreneurs

The initiative also features the National Effort for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI), which grants women entrepreneurs access to essential resources. Key offerings include:

  • Seed Support Program: This program provides early-stage financing specifically for women-led enterprises.

Women Scientist Scheme (WOS)

Another vital aspect is the Women Scientist Scheme (WOS), which aims to revitalize careers in basic and applied research. This program trains women in IPR and has empowered over 2,076 women scientists, many of whom have published significant research and earned doctoral degrees.

Conclusion

Through the myriad of programs under the WISE-KIRAN initiative, the government is laying a stronger foundation for women in STEM fields, ultimately promoting a more diverse and inclusive scientific community in India. Collectively, these efforts not only aim to bolster individual careers but also contribute significantly to the broader landscape of innovation in the nation.
