Empowering Women in STEM: The WISE-KIRAN Initiative

Introduction

To address the persistent gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, the Indian government is launching significant initiatives designed to enhance women’s participation. The Women in Science and Engineering – KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN) initiative seeks to foster inclusivity within these disciplines through support programs targeted specifically at women scientists and engineers.

Fellowship Programs Under WISE-KIRAN

The WISE-KIRAN initiative prominently features various fellowship programs aimed at encouraging research careers among women. Key offerings include:

  • WISE-PhD Fellowship: This program is designed for women pursuing research in both basic and applied sciences, providing mentorship and financial support to enhance their educational outcomes.
  • WISE-Post Doctoral Fellowship (WISE-PDF) and WISE-SCOPE: These programs facilitate women’s transition from doctoral studies to advanced research roles by offering necessary tools and backing.

Reintegrating Experienced Women Scientists

The WIDUSHI Program is a crucial element that assists older women scientists—whether retired or currently unengaged—in continuing their research careers. By recognizing their extensive knowledge, the program aims to reintegrate these women into the scientific community.

Intellectual Property Rights Awareness

Part of the WISE-KIRAN framework is the WISE-IPR program, which provides women with year-long training in intellectual property rights. Understanding IPR is essential for women in STEM, as it empowers them to protect their inventions and research outcomes. This training is aimed at enhancing women’s participation in technological entrepreneurship and ensuring their contributions to India’s innovation landscape are recognized and protected.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Another significant initiative within WISE-KIRAN is the Vigyan Jyoti program. Targeting young girls in grades IX to XII, this initiative encourages them to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing mentorship and support, Vigyan Jyoti aims to inspire girls to enter fields with historically low female participation.

Support for Women Entrepreneurs

The National Effort for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) initiative is tailored specifically for women entrepreneurs, offering essential resources such as:

  • Early-stage finance
  • Mentorship
  • Incubation facilities
  • Capacity building programs

Among these, the NIDHI-Seed Support Program provides seed funding to businesses run by women, promoting entrepreneurship within this demographic.

Promoting Research and Career Revival

The Women Scientist Scheme (WOS) plays an indispensable role in encouraging women to return to basic and applied research. This program focuses not only on facilitating research but also on addressing societal challenges. Through components like WOS-C, women receive training in IPR, enabling many to become registered patent agents, while WOS-A has supported over 2,000 women scientists, leading to numerous research publications and PhD achievements.

Conclusion

The various programs encapsulated within the WISE-KIRAN initiative represent a concerted effort by the Indian government to foster a more diverse and inclusive scientific community. By providing resources, training, and support, these initiatives aim to empower women in STEM, ensuring their contributions to research and innovation are acknowledged and celebrated.
