Becoming an Extraordinary STEM Woman Leader

Despite notable strides in gender equality, women in STEM fields, particularly in life sciences, healthcare, and academia, continue to face barriers in ascending to senior executive roles. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), only about 25.9% of leaders in the pharmaceutical sector are women in STEM, revealing a significant gap.

Defining Extraordinary STEM Women Leaders

In 2023, insights were gathered from 21 STEM women about the characteristics that make certain leaders stand out. Interviews highlighted three key traits that distinguish extraordinary leaders in STEM:

  1. Empathy: Exceptional leaders prioritize the well-being of their colleagues, often taking time for casual conversations that foster relationships. Interviewees described such leaders as emotional savants, able to navigate both personal and professional challenges effectively.
  2. Firmness: These leaders confidently advocate for their beliefs, engaging in constructive disagreements and addressing challenging topics that others may avoid. Their courage to speak up creates a more inclusive and open atmosphere.
  3. Superior Communication: The capacity to inspire both technical and non-technical team members is crucial. Extraordinary leaders articulate their visions compellingly while also addressing finer details, ensuring team clarity and commitment.

Four Strategies for Aspiring Women Leaders

Embodying the traits of empathy, firmness, and effective communication requires intentional actions. Below are four strategies that can empower aspiring women leaders in STEM:

1. Build a Career Team

A supportive career team is crucial for professional growth. This team should include:

  • Mentor: A seasoned professional providing guidance and advice to help navigate your career path.
  • Advocate: Someone who champions your abilities and ensures your contributions are recognized in discussions about promotions or opportunities.
  • Connector: A person with extensive networks who can facilitate introductions to influential stakeholders.
  • Career Coach: This expert assists you in clarifying your career vision and holds you accountable for taking steps toward leadership roles.

Each member plays a pivotal role in accelerating career advancement.

2. Establish Your Expertise

Effective leaders must move beyond their immediate areas of expertise. Engage with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, share your passions, and educate others about your achievements. Providing mentorship and sharing knowledge can help demystify your field and reinforce your reputation.

3. Cultivate Intentional Communication

Be aware of your communication style. To project confidence:

  • Avoid hedging language that creates ambiguity.
  • Replace apologies with assertive statements.
  • Use concise, clear language to articulate your points.

Listening actively and summarizing discussions can also demonstrate engagement and leadership capabilities.

4. Observe Exceptional Leaders

Take the opportunity to learn from distinguished leaders around you. Pay close attention to how they conduct meetings, facilitate discussions, and address conflicts. Noticing their strategies can provide valuable insights into effective leadership practices.

Conclusion

To rise to the top in STEM sectors requires not only a mastery of scientific knowledge but also the development of strong, empathetic relationships within your organization. As the poet Maya Angelou articulated, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Aspiring women leaders in STEM should focus on building connections based on trust and respect, ultimately fostering an environment that encourages innovation and collaboration.
