Empowering Female Footballers: A Path to Careers in Sports
Introduction
The University of Wolverhampton has recently hosted two significant events aimed at inspiring young female footballers. These initiatives aim to highlight the various career pathways available to women in the sports industry.
Training and Workshops
In a collaborative effort with Birmingham City Women’s Under-21s team, the university’s campus became a hub of activity for aspiring players. Participants engaged in a morning session focused on football training followed by in-depth workshops designed to bridge their passion for the sport with potential academic and career opportunities.
Workshop Highlights
- Sport and Exercise Therapy: The first workshop introduced attendees to the Sport and Exercise Therapy degree, emphasizing crucial topics such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury prevention, presented by Katie Davies.
- Biomechanics in Football: The second session, led by Tina Smith, focused on the biomechanics of kicking a football using advanced 2D and 3D motion analysis techniques. This workshop aimed to provide players with insights into the scientific aspects that enhance performance.
Spotlight on Grassroots Football
Later in the week, a dedicated event took place at the university’s Walsall campus, welcoming 15 girls from local grassroots football clubs. This initiative specifically highlighted career development opportunities within coaching and performance sectors in football.
Coaching and Career Insights
The day commenced with a coaching session facilitated by female students Maicie Goulding and Shaquanna Watson. Following this, participants took part in a comprehensive careers workshop that explored various roles within the sports field, encompassing coaching, analysis, therapy, and science. The event wrapped up with a performance analysis workshop led by Kerys Harrop, a lecturer in Football Coaching and Performance.
Participant Reflections
Casey Asuma, a student at Wolverhampton College, expressed her enthusiasm about the event, stating, “It was great to have the opportunity to explore careers through sport; from the technology side to the coaching side. The event has opened my eyes to the different job opportunities, and I will definitely take these into consideration for the future when deciding what I want to do.”
University’s Commitment
The University of Wolverhampton reiterated its ongoing commitment to empowering young women to pursue various career paths in sports, both on and off the pitch. These events are part of a broader initiative to foster inclusivity and enhance the representation of women in sport-related professions.
