New Mural Unveiled at PHX Arena Celebrating Phoenix Mercury Legends
On Saturday, PHX Arena in downtown Phoenix saw the unveiling of a new artwork designed to honor some of the key figures in women’s basketball. This mural was made possible through the joint efforts of the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation and esteemed local muralist, Antoinette Cauley.
Features of the Mural
The newly created mural prominently displays Phoenix Mercury legends, including Diana Taurasi and guard Kahleah Copper. Additionally, it features young athletes from the Jr. Mercury Legacy League youth basketball program, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and development in sports.
Transition from Previous Artwork
This mural replaces the prior artwork that celebrated another Mercury star, Brittney Griner. The former mural marked Griner’s release from detention in Russia, but she has since left the Mercury to join the Atlanta Dream as a free agent.
Previous Artwork Initiatives
Antoinette Cauley has been active in promoting basketball culture in Phoenix. Last summer, she painted a Mercury-themed mural on an outdoor basketball court at Palomino Park as part of the celebrations leading up to the WNBA All-Star Weekend scheduled for 2024 in Phoenix.
