Launch of the Women in Space Leadership Programme (WiSLP)
On September 24, 2024, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) collaborated with the British Council to unveil the Women in Space Leadership Programme (WiSLP). This initiative is part of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) and aims to empower women in the field of space sciences.
Promoting Gender Inclusivity in Space Sciences
The WiSLP seeks to enhance gender-inclusive practices in various institutions, fostering women’s leadership in space sciences through a strategic leadership framework. Coventry University has been designated as the delivery partner for this transformative program.
Empowering Women in Research
Dr. Vandana Singh, Head of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE)-KIRAN division at DST, highlighted the significance of the program, stating, “This initiative marks a vital move toward fostering a gender-inclusive atmosphere in space sciences. By constructing a strong leadership framework, we can empower women to make meaningful contributions to scientific studies and innovation.”
Collaboration for Global Solutions
In emphasizing the importance of collaboration, Michael Houlgate, Deputy Director of the British Council India, called for a greater representation of women in STEM fields, underscoring that collective efforts are essential for addressing global challenges.
Transforming Cultural Perspectives
Dr. Elena Gaura from Coventry University pointed out the need to seek out women who can reshape the existing culture rather than merely replicate it. The program is set to build the leadership skills of 250 early-career researchers, providing them with resources to confront gender biases and develop sustainable support networks.
Encouragement for Women in Space Science
Prof. Annapurni Subramaniyam, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), encouraged women to enter the rapidly expanding field of space science, which is evolving to incorporate diverse disciplines such as engineering and social sciences.
Discussions on Gender Equity
Participants in the WiSLP workshop, which included academics and policymakers, engaged in discussions surrounding the national and global efforts needed to promote gender equity in space sciences.
Future Vision: Mentorship and Innovation
The program aims to create sustainable mentoring networks that augment scientific innovation by incorporating a gender perspective into crucial fields like astrophysics and telecommunications.
