Skateboarding, once perceived predominantly as a male-dominated activity, is witnessing a transformation. A growing number of young girls are stepping onto the skateboards and redefining the sport, showcasing their skills and passion.

A Rising Star: Ophelia’s Journey

At just 13 years old, Ophelia is among this wave of young female skaters. She began her skateboarding journey at the age of four and regularly practices at the Prime Skatepark in Plymouth. Ophelia expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I started seeing so many more girls skateboarding out and about, and it felt amazing to skate with them.”

Female Participation on the Rise

Nick Marker, the chief executive of Prime Skatepark, has observed a significant increase in female skaters over recent years. He noted, “There has been a massive increase in female participation” and emphasized the importance of providing a welcoming environment for everyone.

Ophelia highlighted the lessons learned through skateboarding, stating, “If you fall off, you can just get back up again and try it again. You can still learn something from it.” She reflects on the changing perceptions surrounding female skaters, adding, “People used to say skateboarding wasn’t a girl’s sport, but now I feel we’re all proving them wrong.”

Building a Community

Marker aims to cultivate a healthy skateboarding culture. His commitment to safety is reflected in the under-13 family groups he initiated 12 years ago, which continue to meet every Saturday morning. “We teach people how to absolutely minimize the risk and make it a healthy alternative sport,” he specified.

Parent Involvement and Shared Experiences

The growing community includes dedicated parents like Patrick Gibbs, who has been skateboarding for two decades. He expressed the thrill of the sport, noting its adrenaline rush and the opportunity for bonding with his daughter. “It’s fun, it’s good exercise, and it’s hopefully something we can do together,” he remarked.

Gibbs stressed the importance of safety gear, including knee and elbow pads, as well as helmets, to ensure a secure learning environment. He encouraged skaters to progress gradually, advising newcomers to “build up to the harder stuff.”
