Challenges and Triumphs at the South African Women in Science Awards
At a recent event held at the Imvelo Safari Lodge in Bloemfontein, Deputy Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, highlighted the ongoing struggle to enhance the representation of women in senior scientific positions across South Africa. Despite progress, significant challenges remain in achieving gender equity in the scientific community.
Speaking at the South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA), Deputy Minister Gina commended the finalists across various categories, noting that their innovative research is poised to benefit everyday South Africans. “In the national and development sciences category, finalists are advancing knowledge in areas such as science, critical care, plant pathology, and chemistry,” stated Gina.
Gina emphasized that the 2025 SAWiSA winners and finalists demonstrate distinct qualities that set them apart from their peers, showcasing their contributions to advancing scientific knowledge.
Acknowledging Excellence in Research
Dr. Maphuti Madiga, Deputy Director of the Emerging Researcher Programme, announced that fellowships would be awarded to distinguished women who excel in their respective fields. This year, 30 finalists were recognized across four categories, including Distinguished Women Researchers, Doctoral Fellows, and Master’s Fellows.
The array of accomplishments highlighted during the awards ceremony reflects a commitment to fostering female talent in the sciences, underscoring the importance of mentorship and support in the journey towards gender parity.
