Ibiza Hosts ‘Science and Technology for Women’ Conference
This Wednesday, November 13, Ibiza will launch the inaugural conference titled ‘Science and Technology for Women.’ This event is organized by the Bit Foundation in a simultaneous effort across Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, commencing at 9:00 AM at the Bit Ibiza Center. Aimed at secondary school students from various Balearic institutions, the conference strives to stimulate interest in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Inspiring Women in Science
A highlight of the day will be a roundtable discussion named ‘Why I Decided to Study STEM,’ featuring notable female scientists from the Balearic Islands. The panel includes:
- Estella Matutes – Physician and consultant at the Institute of Cancer Research and Royal Marsden Hospital in London.
- Salud Deudero – Marine biologist and director of the Oceanographic Center of the Balearic Islands (IEO-CSIC).
- María del Mar Muñoz – Computer engineer and CEO of IT Travel Services.
- Marta Pérez – Graduate in Environmental Sciences and coordinator of the Plastic Free Menorca alliance.
These distinguished professionals will share their journeys and insights to motivate young participants, underscoring the significant contributions of women in scientific and technological fields.
Engaging Activities and Workshops
The conference will also feature a variety of interactive workshops focusing on:
- Robotics
- 3D Printing
- Digicraft
Moreover, a contest centered on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place. Students will have the chance to explore exhibitions such as ‘Women Who Changed the World’ and ‘Women Who Change the World,’ which celebrate influential female figures throughout the history of science.
Focus on Female Empowerment in STEM
Initiated by the Directorate General for Innovation and Digital Transformation through the Bit Foundation and in partnership with the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (APTE), this project spans 19 technology parks nationwide. The goal is to challenge gender stereotypes and work towards narrowing the gender gap in scientific careers—a key part of the educational innovation strategy within the Balearic Islands. With this year marking Ibiza’s first involvement, the conference reinforces its commitment to becoming a technological and educational leader in the region.
