Advancing Women in STEM: A Focus on Progress and Potential
Women are making remarkable strides in increasing their presence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines globally. Despite these advancements, a substantial gender disparity remains. There exists a vast reservoir of untapped potential among women who opt not to pursue careers in STEM due to societal challenges. UNESCO is dedicated to fostering gender equality in these fields and empowering women to excel in the world of science.
A Braided River: Celebrating Indian Women in Science
In honor of International Women’s Day 2022, UNESCO New Delhi unveiled a unique and visually engaging publication titled A Braided River: The Universe of Indian Women in Science. This book emphasizes that a significant portion of India’s achievements in STEM can be credited to the dedication and skills of its women scientists.
Showcasing the Contributions of Women Scientists
In 2023, UNESCO presented a photo exhibition celebrating Indian women in science at the Madras Art Guild Festival in Chennai. This exhibition draws upon the aforementioned publication and features images that convey the emotions and aspirations of women scientists across various career stages in both professional and personal contexts. It shines a spotlight on women pushing the boundaries in science and technology throughout India. Much like a braided river navigating obstacles from its source to the ocean, these women face numerous challenges in their professional and personal lives. The exhibition was also displayed at the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) during the Ridge to Reef Conference, part of the South and Central Asian Biosphere Network Meeting held in November 2023.

The Braided River exhibition honors the paths of women scientists, showcasing their invaluable contributions to science and society. In 2024, it was featured at a VR Mall in Surat, captivating audiences with their inspiring narratives. Such exhibitions play a crucial role in promoting gender equality in scientific fields and motivating future generations to pursue their dreams in STEM.
