Highlighting Women’s Roles in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, James Marape, emphasized the significant roles that women play in society while meeting with Christine Arab, the UN Women’s Asia Pacific regional director, in Port Moresby.
Discussion on Gender Issues
During their meeting, the leaders discussed critical issues impacting women, particularly focusing on gender-based violence and harmful accusations related to sorcery. These subjects remain pressing concerns for the nation.
Commitment to Education and Equality
Marape reaffirmed his government’s commitment to universal education, stressing the importance of providing equal opportunities for both girls and boys. He highlighted existing initiatives like the free education policy aiming to promote gender equity in education.
The Foundation of Society
The Prime Minister remarked on the pivotal role of women in nurturing families and raising children, which he views as essential for a healthy society. He believes that supporting women is a crucial component in building societal structures that thrive.
Slow Progress on Gender Equality
Despite considerable efforts, progress toward gender equality in Papua New Guinea has been sluggish. According to the 2021 Gender Inequality Index by the UNDP, the country ranks 160 out of 161 nations, indicating the ongoing challenges faced by women.
Political Participation of Women
Currently, only three women serve in the Parliament of Papua New Guinea, despite women and girls constituting nearly half of the population. Kessy Sawang, an MP from the Rai Coast Open electorate, has spoken about the disparities in political representation for women, citing numerous barriers like cultural obstacles and money politics.
Call for Action
“We encounter many challenges, including intimidation and threats,” said Sawang. She pointed out the need for actionable steps based on research and reports from past elections to ensure a fairer political environment for women.

Furthermore, he suggested that UN Women strengthen its ties with provincial governments and local churches for better program sustainability.
