The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has been proactively enhancing its ranks of female officers, rather than waiting for external changes. Over the past three years, one noteworthy initiative named “Women in Blue” has been instrumental in fostering female recruitment and empowerment.

Currently, women represent approximately 18% of the police force, according to APD spokesperson Jennifer Garcia. She emphasizes the importance of mentorship in this initiative, stating, “You know, it’s great to see other women who want to follow in our footsteps, who want to commit to a job we hold so near and dear to our heart and take the reins when we move on.” This highlights a supportive community aimed at encouraging women to pursue careers in law enforcement.

The “Women in Blue” events take place at the APD Academy located on Second Street Northwest, featuring a series of physical challenges that candidates must complete in training. Participants engage in obstacle course tests, group runs, and other fitness activities tailored to simulate the demands of police training. For those who may not yet feel prepared to tackle these challenges, informational sessions on physical fitness and preparation are also offered.

Garcia notes the transformative effect these events can have on participants, saying, “Some of the participants don’t realize how strong they are, how far they can push themselves. I think it’s a great opportunity in a low-stress environment for them to see some of the goals they can achieve.” This encouraging atmosphere not only builds physical strength but also fosters confidence among potential recruits.

The initiative culminates in a question-and-answer period, allowing women to inquire about various aspects of law enforcement. This segment enables them to gather insights, share experiences, and clarify any misconceptions they may have regarding the profession.

Overall, the APD’s commitment to increasing female representation within its ranks is evident through these empowering programs, which blend physical training with mentorship and community support.
