Empowering Women in Beef Production: Cow Camp 2025
The cattle industry presents unique challenges for women aspiring to gain hands-on experience in beef production. Whether through family ties, aspirations for a career in agriculture, or launching their own herds, many women enter the field without foundational training on managing livestock. Recognizing this gap, Cow Camp 2025 has been developed to offer targeted educational opportunities for women involved in beef production.
Event Overview
Cow Camp 2025 will take place from September 10 to 11 at the K-State Agricultural Research Center in Hays, Kansas. This event aims to empower women by providing practical skills that enhance their confidence and prepare them for more substantial roles in the agricultural workforce.
Insights from Experts
“This is workforce development in the most grounded, impactful way,” stated Sandy Johnson, beef specialist from K-State Research and Extension. “We’re meeting women where they are and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in an industry that depends on smart decisions and shared leadership.”
Workshop Offerings
The program includes a range of workshops tailored specifically for women who are either beginning to manage their first herd, assisting with family operations, or entering the industry from scratch. Key topics will cover:
- Body condition scoring
- Calving preparation
- Simulator training
- Expected progeny differences (EPDs)
- Vaccine handling
- Forage sampling
- Pasture monitoring
Building Capacity and Community
Emma Briggs, another beef production specialist, emphasized the significance of this initiative. “This event is about capacity building. It’s about giving women the skills, support, and access to research-based information they need to contribute meaningfully to their operations and the broader beef industry.” This aligns with the land-grant university mission of bridging the gap between academic research and rural communities.
Addressing Industry Gaps
As the cattle industry evolves, an increasing number of women are stepping into leadership positions in farms and ranches. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding access to training and peer support in rural areas. Cow Camp 2025 addresses these needs by fostering a supportive environment where participants can engage, learn, and network with others facing similar hurdles.
Long-term Commitment to Agriculture
“We’re not just teaching skills—we’re building confidence and community,” Johnson noted. This holistic approach is designed to ensure that women remain engaged in agriculture for the long term, enhancing the sector’s sustainability.
