Empowering Youth and Women in Nigerian Governance
The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has taken a strong stance on increasing opportunities for women and young individuals within Nigeria’s governance structures, viewing their participation as essential for political renewal and sustainable development.
Commitment to Gender Equity and Youth Engagement
Reiterating its dedication to enhancing gender equity, the UNYF emphasized the importance of youth involvement in decision-making processes across various levels of governance. This commitment aligns with the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child: “Empower Her Voice, Secure Her Future.”
Upcoming National Engagement: “The Patriotic Awakening”
Set to take place on Saturday at Arewa House, Kaduna, the event will feature a unique initiative—allocating 49% of discussion platforms to young women. Comrade Olajide Toriah Filani, the National President of UNYF, articulated the rationale behind this initiative, stating:
“Our decision to give young ladies a 49 percent representation reflects our belief that the voices of women must be central in the conversation about Nigeria’s rebirth. The girl child today represents the leadership strength of tomorrow.”
The session, titled “Nigeria the Way Forward: UNYF Setting the Pace in Nigerian Politics—The Emergence of a New Nigeria,” aims to gather young leaders and policy advocates to develop actionable strategies for national rejuvenation through integrity, visionary leadership, and collective action.
A Call to Action for Nigerian Youth
Filani described the forthcoming event as a rallying cry for Nigerian youth, urging them to overcome despair and unite for a more inclusive and responsible nation. He proclaimed:
“This is the time for Nigerian youths to own the process of national renewal—one youth, one dream, one destiny.”
The UNYF is committed to continuing initiatives that empower young Nigerians, particularly women, to act as catalysts for peace, innovation, and development across the nation.
Focus on Electoral Participation
Recently, the UNYF reached out to the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan. They urged him to prioritize accessibility, transparency, and institutional accountability as he begins his tenure.
Filani pointed out that the future credibility of elections relies heavily on making the voter registration process more inclusive and accessible, highlighting the disenfranchisement of many eligible Nigerians due to administrative challenges and limited access to Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Despite existing digital innovations by INEC, Filani emphasized that many citizens, particularly in rural areas, are still without the necessary internet access and infrastructure to participate fully in the electoral process.
