Empowering Veterans Through Fitness: The Story of Erika Learman

Veterans transitioning to civilian life face numerous challenges, but many find ways to utilize their unique experiences to empower others. Erika Learman, a US Army veteran and the founder of Dub Fitness, is a prime example of this transformation. After fulfilling her military service, Learman channeled her passion for health and wellness into creating a supportive community centered around fitness for women.

From Soldier to Entrepreneur

During her time in the military, Erika served as a non-commissioned officer in the military police. This experience instilled in her core values—leadership, integrity, and a commitment to service—that would later drive her entrepreneurial journey. “I always knew I had something valuable to share, and keeping it to myself would be selfish,” Learman reflects regarding her motivation to establish a fitness community.

The Mission of Dub Fitness

At Dub Fitness, Erika’s mission extends beyond physical conditioning; it encompasses mental and emotional resilience. “Movement saves lives,” she asserts. Understanding that many women face unique challenges—balancing careers, families, and self-care—Learman designed her gym as a space where women could build confidence and community while achieving their fitness goals.

A Unique Approach to Fitness

At Dub Fitness, the philosophy is simple yet profound: “You just did the hard part; I’ll take it from here.” This ethos encourages members to leave their burdens at the door. Learman actively participates alongside her members, creating an environment in which everyone feels supported. “I’m on the floor with you, helping you push through,” she emphasizes, noting the genuine connections formed in her gym as women share laughter, tears, and triumphs.

Balancing Motherhood and Entrepreneurship

With two young children at home, Erika navigated the complexities of motherhood while managing her business. Her life experiences, both as a veteran and a mother, deepened her empathy for her clients. “I once didn’t understand the challenges mothers face until I became one,” she admits. This newfound perspective allowed Learman to expand her offerings, including a “Mommy and Me” class that acknowledges the shared struggles of motherhood.

Community Building Beyond the Gym

Erika has also taken her commitment to supporting fellow veterans to a larger stage. She is actively involved with the Greater Philadelphia Veterans Network, where she helps emerging veteran entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls in business. “I want to share my failures so that others can succeed,” she says, emphasizing the importance of mentorship in the veteran community.

Addressing Health Challenges Nationwide

Erika acknowledges the growing obesity crisis in the United States, noting that nearly 70% of adults are classified as overweight or obese. In response, she advocates for proactive approaches to health: “If we neglect our health today, we’ll face greater medical costs tomorrow.” Erika aims to educate her community on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than temporary diets, emphasizing holistic well-being.

The Role of Education in Health and Fitness

Throughout her journey, Erika has stressed the importance of early education in establishing lifelong healthy habits. She implemented wellness lessons at the Philadelphia Military Academy, engaging students in discussions around nutrition, exercise, and mental health. “The goal is to equip young people with knowledge and habits that will serve them throughout their lives,” she asserts.

Giving Back: The Rough Ride Initiative

One of Erika’s significant contributions to the veteran community is her involvement with the Rough Ride initiative, a 24-hour spin relay designed to raise funds for service dogs for injured veterans. “It should not be a burden to care for a service dog; they’re life-saving companions,” she explains, noting that the initiative aims to remove financial barriers for those in need.

A Call to Action

Through her work, Erika Learman embodies resilience, community, and advocacy, and she encourages others to find similar pathways. “There’s enough room in this world for everyone to thrive,” she believes. Her journey illustrates how veterans can leverage their experiences to create supportive and empowering environments for others, turning challenges into opportunities for growth.
