Born in Saint Lucia, Professor Cynthia Barrow-Giles stands out as a prominent figure in constitutional governance and politics. She currently holds a prestigious position as a professor at the University of the West Indies (UWI), located at the Cave Hill Campus.
Professional Accomplishments
Professor Barrow-Giles has an impressive portfolio, including her role as a Distinguished Senior Fellow in the Constitutional Studies Programme at the University of Texas at Austin, effective from 2022 to 2025. Additionally, she has played vital administrative roles at UWI, serving as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Deputy Dean of Outreach, and Head of the Department of Government, Sociology, Social Work, and Psychology.
Research and Contributions
With a remarkable contribution to literature on Caribbean governance, she has authored, co-authored, and co-edited numerous publications, encompassing five books. Her expertise in the field has been sought after, leading her to participate in various Election Monitoring and Expert Groups across continents, including Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Public Service and Recognition
From 2005 to 2011, Professor Barrow-Giles was actively involved with the Saint Lucia Constitution Reform Commission. In 2021, she was appointed by Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados to serve as an Adviser to the Republican Status Transition Advisory Committee (RSTAC). Her dedication to public service has not gone unnoticed, as she received the Principal’s Award for Excellence in 2020 and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service in 2021.
