The Sports Bra: A Hub for Women’s Sports and Queer Community
Introduction
Opened in April 2022, The Sports Bra in Portland has emerged as a pioneering establishment, dedicated to promoting women’s sports while fostering a welcoming environment for the queer community. Its unique approach has gathered significant attention, turning it into a valued space for many residents and visitors alike.
A Personal Journey to The Sports Bra
Allison Clarke’s connection to The Sports Bra began as a quest for community after relocating to Portland. At that time, she was recently graduated and unemployed, seeking out local queer bars to connect with others. Her previous interest in basketball—developed during high school—was not extended to a detailed knowledge of the current WNBA or NCAA basketball scene, prompting her to inquire about job opportunities at the bar.
By February 2024, Clarke secured a position as a dishwasher, which eventually led to her role as a bartender. “I wasn’t so into sports when I started there,” Clarke admits. However, working at The Sports Bra enabled her to embrace her identity as a queer woman, building connections with others who had similar experiences.
A Space for All
The Sports Bra has created a dynamic environment that appeals to a diverse clientele. Clarke estimates that approximately half of the bar’s patrons identify as lesbians, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere. Many of the athletes featured on the screens are also openly queer, allowing customers to feel represented in the sports they enjoy.
Nat Lemire, a frequent visitor from Boston, emphasizes the importance of visibility: “It’s great to have the representation. You feel like your community is out there on the screen.” For Lemire and her fiancée Lauren, The Sports Bra is a must-visit destination, symbolizing their connection during the early aspects of their relationship.
Inclusivity Beyond Queer Community
Women’s sports attract a broader audience, including families who wish to introduce their children to female athletes and sports. Clarke notes that The Sports Bra aims to provide a family-friendly atmosphere where anyone can enjoy a game, grab a meal, or relax with friends. The establishment frequently updates its weekly TV schedule via its website and social media channels, inviting patrons to engage with women’s sports.
A Distinctive Atmosphere
The Sports Bra stands apart from traditional sports bars, often dominated by male-centered culture and heavy drinking. It welcomes all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sports preference. Customers, including families and friends, regularly assemble to watch games or enjoy meals, fostering a sense of community.
“It sucks when there’s a major women’s game going on,” shares Lemire, echoing sentiments that propelled founder Jenny Nguyen to establish The Sports Bra as a sanctuary for women’s sports fans.
Future Growth and Challenges
The establishment recently announced plans to expand to cities including Boston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and St. Louis, given the growing demand in Portland itself. However, Jamila Winston, a local patron, highlights an area for improvement: the need for racial diversity within the bar’s demographic. She notes that while the space is inclusive, there remains a challenge in attracting a more racially diverse clientele.
Despite this concern, The Sports Bra continues to serve as a meaningful platform where women, queer individuals, and sports fans can unite and celebrate their shared passions.
