Insights from Industry Experts
Monica McNutt, an esteemed basketball analyst for ESPN and MSG Networks, shared her thoughts on the significance of this summit for Black women in sports. She stated, “Being here at CultureCon’s first Sports Summit is amazing. There are so many Black women who are doing major things in sports, and they deserve to be celebrated. This is a huge moment.”
McNutt moderated a panel titled “Forward Motion: A Celebration of Women in Sports,” featuring prominent figures such as WNBA player Deja Kelly, Chief Brand Officer of the New York Liberty Shana Stephenson, Women’s heavyweight champion Claressa Shields, and Shakeemah Simmons-Winter from KLUTCH SPORTS GROUP. The panel engaged in discussions on self-care, challenges in a male-dominated industry, and the opportunity for women in sports to thrive today.
Panel Highlights: Overcoming Challenges
Deja Kelly addressed her experiences as a young athlete navigating a predominantly male field while simultaneously building her brand. She emphasized the significance of creating opportunities beyond basketball, stating, “Just because I’m creating these different opportunities for myself… I shouldn’t be penalized by a business for that.”
Shakeemah Simmons-Winter reflected on balancing professional demands with family life, crediting her family for providing motivation and support during challenging times. She remarked, “I think the beauty of my children and my husband and my family is that they give me an additional purpose.”
Claressa Shields shared her perspective on authenticity in a social media-driven world. “I’m not afraid to stand on what I said and how I feel,” she commented, highlighting the temporary nature of public scrutiny.
Advice for Aspiring Women in Sports
Shana Stephenson offered valuable tips for women aspiring to enter sports entertainment, stressing the importance of maintaining focus amidst negativity. “It’s crucial to kill the noise,” she advised, underlining the need to stay grounded in one’s purpose and goals.
