Empowering Men as Allies for Gender Equality
Women’s Health Victoria (WHV) has introduced a transformative online training program tailored for men aiming to strengthen their roles as allies in the pursuit of gender equality—whether in personal relationships, workplaces, or the broader community.
A Collaborative Approach
The Men as Allies program, crafted by WHV alongside men dedicated to fostering respect, equality, and accountability, seeks to enlighten men about their pivotal position in advancing gender equality and combatting gender-based violence and disrespect.
Who Can Benefit?
This training is particularly beneficial for male leaders, those striving to enhance workplace culture, and individuals wishing to become improved partners, fathers, friends, or colleagues.
The Crucial Role of Men
WHV’s gender equity and capacity-building manager, Lauren Zappa, emphasizes, “Men play an essential role in reshaping the attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate gender-based violence and inequality. This program helps equip men with the confidence and tools necessary to take substantive action as allies, inspiring them to be role models of respect and accountability.”
Fostering Open Communication
Course developer and WHV training consultant, Jason Rostant, highlighted the program’s unique approach. “Instead of merely discussing men, we aim to engage with them directly and encourage dialogue among themselves,” he explained. “Many men want to contribute positively but often hesitate due to fears of making mistakes or facing backlash. This program provides a supportive environment for men to reflect, learn, and impact societal change confidently and practically.”
Accessible and Practical Training
The Men as Allies training takes approximately two hours to complete, featuring practical modules, real-life scenarios, and resources designed to empower men to make significant contributions to gender equality.
Best of all, the program is entirely free, available online, and allows participants the flexibility to complete it at their own pace.
A Proactive Stance Against Violence
“By engaging men as allies, we’re adopting a proactive stance against gender-based violence. This initiative stands as a commitment to promoting respect and justice across all facets of life,” stated Ms. Zappa.
